Darth Vader’s Original Voice
April 8th, 2010

This was new to me — not the fact that David Prowse was the actor, but what he sounded like on set:

  1. Jai says:

Oh, crap. I guess the prequel Vaders were trying to match THIS guy's acting ability, instead of James Earl Jones'. That explains so much.

  2. White667 says:

I actually helped out at a charity event and had to spend 2 hours on stage being commanded around by David Prowse in July last year. He was a bit annoying and charged a ridiculous amount for autographs and the like. (Considering it was meant to be a charity appearance)

But yeah, xD Met 'im, worked with him… So forth. xD (I woulda' rathered James Earl Jones too.)

  3. Blaise Pascal says:

Legend has it that David Prowse was also well known for leaking stuff to the press, even when told not to. In Empire Strikes Back, however, Darth Vader has the Big Reveal at the end, which no one wanted leaked so it would be a big surprise in the theater for the greatest impact. They solved the issue by giving Prowse a doctored version of the script, in which he reveals to Luke that "Obi-wan is your father". Everyone else, including Mark Hamil, knew the real line, and reacted accordingly.

    • Boboe says:

Sorry to disagree, but I have seen several interviews with Mark Hamel where he talks about how hard it was to react not knowing what the reveal was. They were pretty much all running blind. Lucas kept that one between himself and James Earl Jones.

  5. Mark says:

i have to say, i'm guessing No One would sound good with a giant black helemt over their head… unless there was equipment inside to help speak. (doubting that much due to the original budget)

seriously, buy a darth vader helmet.. slam it over your head and see how you sound like…. always found it amusing though, this tiny weasel white guy at the end… with a black mans voice.

  6. Keegan says:

    2 minutes in… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4PTQCN8Juo

He was a body builder, hired for size more than the voice. Good job too I guess. ;)

  7. Ajax says:

HaHa! He sounds so wimpy compared to Jones! but to piss all over what Blaise said, the real line was "Obi-wan killed your father" and only Mark knew the real line. They told him right before they shot the scene.

    • Tim says:

exactly. It wouldn't make sense for Luke to go wild and be tempted to join Vader just because Obi Wan was his father. Prowse would have figured out that was clearly a lie.

  8. Mongoose says:

All I can hear is Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet.

  9. Chawunky says:

In a making-of documentary for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy TV series, the fellow who wore the Marvin costume mentioned speaking to Prowse (who had a bit part as a bodyguard), noting they had in common that they had both be cast as the guy in the suit but weren't doing the voice.

The Marvin actor said he asked Prowse why he thought they didn't let him voice Vader, and he replied, "Oi've no oideer!"

    • @CoffeeJedi says:

Shouldn't they have already known each other? Marvin was Warwick Davis, the guy who played Wicket the Ewok in RotJ.

      • Jai says:

Yeah, because of all of those scenes in RotJ that have both Wicket and Darth Vader in them.

      • DrPepperMD says:

You've misread. He said it was the Hitchhiker's TV series, which aired on BBC2 in 1981. Marvin was played by David Learner, and the voice was Stephen Moore.

You are thinking of the Hitchhiker's movie, where the costume was worn by Warwick Davis and Marvin was voiced by Alan Rickman.

  10. Sheana says:

Well, that explains Ray Park and Darth Maul a lot, too. Seems to be a running thing with the Darths in film.

I feel bad, I shouldn't be laughing at this but I am. After being so used to James Earl Jones it's just so hilariously inappropriate.

  11. Simon says:

Just a quick comment – Prowse isn't Scottish, he's from the Westcountry. Quite a massive difference.

  12. Dsut says:

I used to live in the house Prowse moved out of after the star wars gig. That aside. His acting is great. His voice is space-balls comedic.

  13. DeeBee says:

You should all check David Prowse out as the Green Cross Code man, road safety superhero type from the 70's/80's in the UK. Very camp!

  14. djublonskopf says:

On the set, Carrie Fisher said they used to call him "Daisy Vader" 'cause he sounded so . . . not intimidating.
